Wicked Witch Drawing Timelapse
The drawing prompt “poppies” inspires me to sketch from the classic film.
Artist Aaron Blaise (owner of Creature Art Teacher) has been encouraging all of us to draw more—every day in fact—through his Daily Drawing YouTube series. Yesterday’s sketch prompt was “poppies”—which immediately made me think of the iconic scene from The Wizard of Oz where the witch puts Dorothy and her friends to sleep by casting a nefarious spell.
For premium members of Artist’s Cheat Sheet, I have included a time-lapse video below. In the video, you will see that I—
Develop the picture quickly using major shapes.
Save small shapes and details for the end, adding them only after the big shapes look correct.
Pay careful attention to tonal value (dark, light, mid-tones).
Keep the drawing very loose, especially at the beginning.
Finish up with shape corrections, strategic softening of edges, and added detail in selected areas.
The actual drawing took about three hours, but the video condenses the process to just one minute.
